Chia

Salvia hispânica L., also known as “Chia”, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to Mexico. It was cultivated by the Aztec in pre-Columbian times. Economic historians have suggested that it was as important as maize as a food crop. It is still used in Mexico and Guatemala, with the seeds sometimes ground, while whole seeds are used for nutritious drinks and as a food source. It is a very rich food with omega-3, omega-6, proteins, oil, fibers, anti-oxidants and amino acids.

It doesn’t have gluten or high levels of sodium. The word “Chia” comes from the Aztec word (Nahuatl) “Chian”, meaning oily, but there are some citations saying that for the Maians it meant strength.
